Lisbon: Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark his final appearance on football’s biggest stage, bringing an end to one of the most remarkable careers in the sport’s history.
Speaking via video link at a Saudi forum on Tuesday, the 40-year-old forward, who has scored over 950 goals for club and country, said he plans to retire from professional football within “one or two years.”
“Definitely, yes,” Ronaldo said when asked if the 2026 tournament would be his World Cup swansong. “I’m gonna be 41 years old, and I think it will be the moment.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, currently playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, reiterated that his retirement is approaching. “Let’s be honest, when I say soon, it’s probably one or two years I’ll still be in the game,” he added.
Ronaldo, who has represented Portugal in five World Cups since 2006, is targeting a record sixth appearance at the 2026 edition to be held across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. His best performance came in 2006, when Portugal reached the semi-finals before losing to France.
Portugal have yet to secure qualification but can book their ticket with a victory over Ireland on Thursday.
Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in early 2023 following his departure from Manchester United, a move that inspired several top players to join the Saudi Pro League amid the kingdom’s ambitious sports investment drive.
Saudi Arabia, which is investing heavily in sports and entertainment as part of its Vision 2030 diversification plan, was confirmed as the host of the 2034 FIFA World Cup last December.
